Page 57: Facing our fears
Today's topic is fear,
At some point in our lives we have experienced a form of fear. It is something that everyone experiences at some point in their lives.
In my professional career I have seen talented superstars sabotage themselves, because at some point they allowed their fears to determine the direction of their lives. Facing our fears may be one of the hardest things we as individuals may do one day. If we don't face those fears and keep ignoring them, they have the potential to grow into a monster, and before you know it, we living our lives way below our capabilities because we have been paralyzed by the fear.
Everybody has their own fears. Some of us have a fear of heights, others a fear of intimacy, then there are financial fears, or a fear of death, and the list goes on. However, if you don't address your fears and allow these fears to control you they can last 30, 40, or even 50 years. I remember talking to my grandmother, and she told me she had a fear of water from the age of 5, and she was 69 years old. She hasn't ever put a foot in the ocean because of her 64 year long fear. I don't know about you but it makes me wonder what her life would've been like had she not been afraid of water. Maybe she could've been an Olympic swimmer.
I am not trying to down play anyone's fears, but I do feel like most of the times we have fears it is because we are over thinking a situation. When we other think a situation our fears, they tend to become bigger.
A way I have learned to deconstruct my fears, is to write down the fear, create a strategy to mitigate the risk (if there is a risk i.e. fear of drowning - your way to mitigate the risk of drowning is to have someone present), and lastly come up with a way to get back to the status quo (back to drowning - you way back may be to get swimming lessons, then get comfortable to the point where you no longer need someone present, and the fear has dissolved)
Most of the time when we have fears, those fears hardly ever manifest. I'm not saying they will "never" happen, but there is a high chance you won't experience them. Writing your fears down and coming up with a strategy to face them if they ever manifested, is a solid way to start watering down your fears to a point where they no longer control you or your actions.
Imagine how your life would look, and the things you would do if you were no longer held back by our fears.
